Mali delivers a brilliant burst of pop with ‘Saviour Complex’

Mali is back with ‘Saviour Complex’, a wonderfully infectious new single that turns the uncomfortable pressure of being somebody’s hero into one of her most immediate pop moments yet.

Drawing directly from her own experiences of not wanting to be the person responsible for saving everything, Mali approaches the subject with an irresistible lightness. Grooving synth-bass lines give the track its swagger, while huge melodies, playful ad-libs and her effortlessly expressive vocals make ‘Saviour Complex’ burst with personality.

The accompanying video matches that spirit perfectly, bringing an exuberant and youthful visual dimension to a song that refuses to let its deeper ideas weigh down its sense of fun.

‘Saviour Complex’ also offers another glimpse of Mali’s forthcoming album Where Was I?, written after she returned to Mumbai in 2022. Created with collaborator Keshav Dhar, the record examines change, belonging and the strange realisation that life can move forward before you’ve fully processed what came before.

Following performances alongside Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran, Mali sounds ready for another major leap. ‘Saviour Complex’ is colourful, clever and absolutely overflowing with pop brilliance.
