Big Winner finds the surreal in suburban life on ‘Blissin’ Out’

‘Blissin’ Out’ is the kind of song that could only have come from somebody returning to music after life has thoroughly rearranged itself.

Charles Griffin Gibson, formerly of the project CHUCK, resurfaces here as Big Winner with a debut single shaped by parenthood, migration, memory and the peculiar emotional static of getting older.

He originally left music behind in 2019 when he moved from Brooklyn to Oslo, selling his equipment and stepping away from the cycle altogether. But by the time songs began returning five years later, the circumstances had changed completely. He was now a father of two, living in Scandinavia, surrounded by routine and domestic clutter, with his American past starting to feel distant enough to become almost dreamlike.

Throughout this new offering, he’s clearly interested in the way ordinary family life can suddenly open into something much stranger, where washing dishes, watching children grow or remembering your younger self can become emotionally overwhelming without warning.

For the forthcoming album Dinosaur, he imposed a no-new-gear rule, limiting himself physically to a cheap classical guitar and an egg shaker. Everything else was assembled from MIDI instruments, remote collaborators and Creative Commons sound effects. And that stripped-down setup appears to have sharpened the project’s identity already.

The project title Big Winner itself carries a slight wink, while Dinosaur draws equally from his son’s fascination with prehistoric creatures and his own sense of slowly becoming obsolete. And that balance of humour and unease gives the music real personality.

Big Winner sounds like Charles Gibson discovering that the most interesting material wasn’t waiting for him in a studio. It was already piling up at home.
