There’s a lovely sense of movement at the heart of ‘Waterfall Laughter’. What begins as a relaxed Latin-folk groove gradually opens outward, gathering warmth, rhythm and momentum until it feels like a musical landscape changing around you.
As the second chapter of Baldy Crawlers’ forthcoming Fais Toi Plaisir, it also works as the record’s pivot point. The first chapter, ‘Hatred?’, approached protest with restraint. Here, the mood shifts decisively towards connection, sensuality and the natural world.
Norrell Thompson’s vocal carries much of that transition. Beginning in English before moving naturally into Spanish, the bilingual structure feels unforced, almost like a reflection of how the song itself wants to travel.
Lyrically, the song works on two levels at once. It’s clearly a love song, but its subject gradually widens until the earth itself becomes part of that intimacy. Lines about firefly paths, timelessness and the dissolution of ownership give the track a gently utopian quality, while the repeated idea that “she makes me better than I am” allows the romantic and ecological readings to sit comfortably together.
Jonathan Montes’ piano brings a supple Latin character, while Marc Weller’s pedal steel adds a different kind of colour, softening the borders between folk, Americana and Latin music. Ross Schodek, José Miguel Perez and Cougar Estrada help push the rhythm forward until the track reaches its more celebratory final stretch.
Instead of choosing between contemplation and movement here, Baldy Crawlers allow one to become the other. The song starts grounded and intimate, then gradually finds its way towards something more communal.
As the bridge between the restraint of ‘Hatred?’ and the more overtly dance-driven direction promised by the next chapter, ‘Waterfall Laughter’ feels like a well-judged turning point; offering something warm, earthy and quietly joyful.
