The recent explosion of ambient music is making it hard to weed the great from the good (all music is good, objectively). Thankfully many resources exist as necessary sieves, one such is the always trustable A Closer Listen. A recent perusal of their site led me to stumble upon nocny, a ‘heavily edited’ 45 minute ambient piece by Polish artist mayforest, real name Christian Maiwald.
The brooding passages throughout the piece are interwoven by blissful threads of ambience and atmospheric instrumentation. The ocean of colour mayforest paints silence with is brought to a tearfully melancholic end, the wash of ambience succeeded by harmonic tonal resonance. I do feel my ears have been massaged, the sign of effective ambient music.
