Silk Daisys’ new single ‘It’s A Laugh’ is the kind of bittersweet earworm that hides a bruise beneath a smile. The Atlanta-based dream-pop/post-punk duo- made up of James Abercrombie and Karla Jean Davis- wrap jangling 12-string guitar lines, handclaps, and irresistible hooks around the well-worn “sad clown” archetype, creating something that shimmers even as it sighs. It’s a love letter to The Primitives, The Go-Go’s, and every band that’s ever smuggled melancholy into a melody bright enough to fool the casual listener.
From the outset, the track glows with classic indie-pop buoyancy- the chiming guitar tones glint like sun off glass, while Karla’s vocals carry the same breezy charisma that made the Go-Go’s so irresistible. Yet listen closer and you’ll hear the emotional contrast: a quietly sardonic lyricism that winks even as it aches. James’ jangly 12-string solo lands somewhere between The Cure’s more upbeat moments and the sparkle of C86 pop, adding both texture and bite.
The recording process mirrors the track’s warmth- friends and family crowding the studio, including the couple’s 8-year-old daughter joining in on handclaps. Produced with Damon Moon at Standard Electric Recorders, and finished with mixing by Troy Stains and mastering by Ride’s Mark Gardener, the single has both the polish and punch to stand proudly alongside its influences without losing its DIY soul.
On the surface with ‘It’s A Laugh’, it’s all sunshine and sugar-rush hooks. Underneath, it’s quietly reflective- a knowing nod to the way joy and sadness often blur together. Silk Daisys may be new to releasing music publicly, but they sound like they’ve been perfecting their bittersweet alchemy for decades.
