Ramblerman confronts the shadows on ‘Lemonade (Charity Single)’

Canberra songwriter Ramblerman (the creative outlet of Stephen Dobson) doesn’t deal in throwaway moments. His songs feel designed, not in the clinical sense, but in the way an architect sketches lines that inevitably become shelter. With ‘Lemonade’, his latest release, Dobson turns a period of private darkness into something raw, unflinching, and- most importantly- shareable.

At its centre, the song circles the restless churn of depression- the way thoughts loop back on themselves, leaving you pacing through your own mind. The instrumentation mirrors that mood: spacious, deliberate, almost meditative in its repetition. Each chord seems to linger longer than expected, as if caught on the same ruminations that inspired the lyric. But what saves ‘Lemonade’ from being swallowed by its subject matter is its flicker of resilience. There’s an ache here, yes, but also a quiet refusal to let that ache define the whole story.

Dobson almost didn’t release this song, and you can hear why: it’s too close, too honest, too bound up in memories of a time he tried hard to leave behind. But that honesty is exactly what gives it power. You can sense the turning point in his decision to bring it into the light- that moment when vulnerability transforms into strength, when private pain becomes communal catharsis.

Fans of Iron & Wine, Bill Callahan, or Hiss Golden Messenger will recognise the same lyrical directness and hushed intimacy, though Ramblerman’s voice is distinctly his own. He weaves soul and folk into something contemporary without losing its timeless weight. ‘Lemonade’ isn’t a song of triumph, but of persistence- the kind that insists survival itself is its own form of victory.

It’s the kind of track that lingers long after it ends, echoing like the quiet thoughts we try to outrun. In choosing to release it, Ramblerman reminds us that there’s strength in speaking the unspeakable, and that even the heaviest feelings can take on new light when shared.

All proceeds from the song will go to Beyond Blue and the Black Dog Institute (via the Gofundme campaign and 100% of song sales via Bandcamp)- two incredible organisations that provide support and vital services for people living with depression and anxiety.
