Since forming earlier this year, OpCritical have made their intentions unusually clear. This is a project built around confrontation, using music as a way to engage with political tension, social instability and the growing sense that many people are being pushed towards the edge. And on ‘Parachute’, their seventh release of 2026, that mission takes on one of its most direct forms yet.
At the centre of the track is the simple image of falling and the desperate need for something to stop the descent. OpCritical use that idea as both a personal and collective metaphor, turning the parachute into a symbol of safety, autonomy and the possibility of regaining control when everything around you feels increasingly unstable.
But instead of burying the message beneath obscure abstraction, ‘Parachute’ leans into its central idea and allows it to carry the emotional weight. The accompanying video pushes that further, presenting sabotage, survival and eventual escape in stark visual terms before resolving on the word “freedom” itself.
There’s an anthemic quality to the concept, but what makes it work is the sense of urgency underneath it. OpCritical are writing from a position of frustration with the direction of the world, particularly the erosion of democratic freedoms and the conditions faced by people living under oppressive systems. The song therefore feels like an attempt to create solidarity around a shared desire for dignity and security.
With a rapid run of releases already behind them, OpCritical seem determined to treat songwriting as an ongoing response to events rather than a detached creative exercise. ‘Parachute’ fits naturally into that broader body of work, combining a clear social message with imagery designed to be immediate and memorable.
As political music, it’s deliberately uncomplicated in its aims. OpCritical want us to recognise the fall, understand the need for something better, and imagine the possibility of pulling ourselves towards safer ground. ‘Parachute’ is a forceful continuation of that purpose, and another sign that this is a band intent on keeping its message firmly in the foreground.
