There’s an immediate sense of unease around ‘ghostdown’, but Midgriefs don’t let that darkness become static. The track moves with a strange kind of purpose, carrying its weight forward through a blend of lo-fi grit, experimental rock texture and a melodic pull that keeps the song from disappearing completely into the shadows.
As the opening statement from forthcoming album Signs of Laughter, ‘ghostdown’ introduces a project concerned with distance, mortality and the difficult act of holding onto hope when there is little visible reason to do so.
And that balance between accessibility and strangeness is central to the song’s appeal. There’s something recognisably grounded in its emotional core, but the production gives the track an almost alien quality, as though familiar feelings are being refracted through a slightly distorted lens.
The title itself feels distinctly appropriate. ‘ghostdown’ suggests both disappearance and collapse, yet the song never fully gives in to either. Instead, there’s a persistent sense of resistance beneath the surface. Even as the lyrics and atmosphere circle ideas of isolation and darkness, the track keeps reaching for something just beyond view.
Alex Thompson’s production and mixing work helps preserve that ambiguity. The track feels intimate without sounding small, while the lo-fi elements give it texture rather than just roughness. .
Throughout, ‘ghostdown’ exists in the uncomfortable middle ground where grief, fear and optimism overlap, and where progress can feel almost impossible to measure. Midgriefs isn’t interested in pretending the tunnel is already over. They are interested in the feeling of knowing, somehow, that there may still be something waiting at the other end.
