Some songs hide emotional uncertainty beneath a cloud of melancholy, but Martin Kuiper does something far more interesting on ‘Still I Promise’. Here, he wraps doubt, vulnerability and the fear of commitment inside one of his brightest and most immediately appealing rock songs to date.
The sixth single from forthcoming album Prison Of Modesty, the track captures the awkward space between loving someone and knowing you aren’t yet ready to give them everything they need. Here, he is asking for time, space and the chance to repair himself before attempting to build something lasting with somebody else.
Musically, ‘Still I Promise’ bursts with warmth. Catchy choruses, layered harmonies and an abundance of melodic detail give the track a summery lift, while its rock foundation keeps the arrangement energetic and full-bodied. Kuiper’s affection for The Beatles and The Beach Boys can be heard in the vocal interplay and carefully stacked melodies, but the song never loses the directness of his own songwriting.
The surf guitar solo is a particularly inspired touch. Playful, vivid and perfectly suited to the imagery of a rudderless ship caught in a storm, it adds both humour and movement to a song built around emotional instability.
The production team surrounding him also helps turn that initial idea into something expansive. Collaborators including Henk Wesselink, Ymte Koekkoek, Jim Zwinselman and Erik Neimeijer bring depth and momentum, while producer Guido Aalbers ensures the track retains both clarity and rock heft.
Having issued his first song at the age of 49, he has since built an increasingly confident catalogue through albums, EPs and live recordings. His late arrival gives the writing a lived-in perspective, particularly when he admits that the relationship behind ‘Still I Promise’ was partly drawn from his own turbulent beginnings with the woman who has now been his partner for more than twenty-five years.
Bright, heartfelt and packed with melody, ‘Still I Promise’ is a superb example of Martin Kuiper’s ability to combine classic rock songwriting with emotional openness. It’s the sound of someone caught in the storm, still believing the shore is worth reaching.
