Legends of the Seven Golden Vampires take a major step forward on ‘The Pumphouse of Broken Dreams’

A band can become more focused without becoming less interesting, and The Pumphouse of Broken Dreams proves it.

Legends of the Seven Golden Vampires built much of their early reputation around eclecticism. Their debut moved freely through psychedelic rock, funk, trip-hop and electronic music, often with a deliberate disregard for conventional boundaries. That approach certainly earned them attention, but it also meant the music could occasionally feel like several different records competing for the same space.

But this follow-up solves that problem without sacrificing personality, and the key difference is continuity as Ilse Van Der Linden’s vocals gives the album a consistent emotional thread, allowing the surrounding production to take risks without making the record feel fragmented.

There are electronic sections that nod towards Orbital, moodier passages that recall Portishead, and moments of art-rock unease that sit comfortably alongside comparisons to Radiohead. But instead of advertising each influence separately, the band fold them into a shared aesthetic.

Highlight ‘Come Home’ demonstrates their melodic instincts particularly well, while ‘Lost & Burnt’ leans towards a more bruised atmosphere. Opening single ‘To Think, To Heal’ introduces something more inward-looking, while the closer ‘BLEND’ feels appropriately representative of the band’s method.

Two years of work have clearly gone into shaping the project, and that patience shows in the sequencing and overall balance. Nothing feels rushed or casually thrown together. And most importantly, the band sound as though they now understand which parts of their identity matter most.

The experimentation and refusal to fit neatly into one genre remain, but what has changed is the confidence with which those elements are controlled.

The Pumphouse of Broken Dreams is ultimately a refinement of the boldness of the debut record. And in many ways, that makes the album even more adventurous.
