There’s something immediately familiar about the feeling at the centre of Chris Home’s new single ‘Saturday High’. It’s about everything that happens before a big night out: the plans taking shape, the first drink, the journey across town and that brief sense that the weekend could still become anything.
As the opening single from his forthcoming album Everything Ends With Songs, the track provides a straightforward introduction to his guitar-led songwriting. Built initially on acoustic guitar before being developed at RoomTo Studio in Barcelona, ‘Saturday High’ carries a clear 90s British indie influence, with bright guitars, a steady rhythmic drive and enough swagger to give the song some lift without overplaying it.
There are shades of Oasis in its melodic shape and a little of Reverend and The Makers in the attitude, but he keeps the track grounded in his own perspective. The appeal lies in the specificity of the moment he’s describing. A Saturday might mean football, the pub, meeting friends or simply getting out of the house, but the song focuses on that shared emotional space before any of it begins.
The Barcelona sessions also add another layer of warmth to the recording. Producers Oscar García Bragado and Jason Boshoff help expand the original acoustic framework without losing its simplicity, while backing vocals from the frontman’s wife Sarah give the chorus a personal touch that fits naturally with the song’s easygoing character.
Nothing here feels unnecessarily complicated, and that works in the track’s favour. ‘Saturday High’ succeeds because it captures a recognisable feeling with clarity, rather than trying to turn it into something grander than it needs to be.
As a first glimpse of Everything Ends With Songs, it is an effective one. Bright, melodic and quietly nostalgic, ‘Saturday High’ finds Chris Home recognising that sometimes the most memorable part of going somewhere is the feeling just before you leave.
