With its mixture of theatricality, shadowy electronics and unabashed personality, the project has always felt built around contradiction, and new single ‘Miami Song’ takes that instinct to its most compelling place yet.
Where much of Be My Wife’s earlier material carried the precision of an artist carefully assembling every detail, ‘Miami Song’ feels looser, stranger and far more instinctive. Its glistening synths and propulsive rhythm immediately bring a sense of movement while still retaining the artist’s own wonderfully eccentric character. There’s glamour here, certainly, but it’s a glamour with frayed edges that feels most alive once the night has begun to unravel.
Written during a difficult period spent in Miami caring for his father, the track turns an outwardly bright setting into the backdrop for something far heavier.
