Ireland’s Indigos Ego sound like a band with a firm grip on both ambition and atmosphere. It’s surprising that they have just two singles to their name, whilst managing to sound established and self-assured. Their latest release, ‘Affection’, is a brooding yet luminous track that treads the line between catharsis and restraint, building an emotional weight through layered instrumentation and a performance that feels truly experienced rather than staged.
There’s a cinematic quality to how the band constructs their sonic world: Anne O’Reilly’s vocals are strikingly expressive, floating above a stormy backdrop of textured guitars and pulsing drums that recall the emotional sweep of Radiohead or the moody edge of Manchester Orchestra. Yet there’s something deeply vulnerable here, too. ‘Affection’ doesn’t just sound big- it feels close, like a confessional whispered through distortion.
While their influences are worn on their sleeves, Indigos Ego never feel like copyists. There’s a distinctly Irish undercurrent running through the track- a poetic melancholy and emotional candour that sets them apart. If ‘Affection’ is a sign of what’s to come on their upcoming debut ‘Dark Waters’, we’re in for something special.
The accompanying video only deepens the song’s reflective core, pairing the gorgeously personal feeling of home videos with individual musical performances. The video provides a visual that completely complements the song’s introspective tone. For a band barely a year old, Indigos Ego are clearly already speaking with a rare clarity- and ‘Affection’ makes it clear they’ve got more to say.
