‘Where Do You Go?’ finds Suzy’s Field having fun with atmosphere without letting the concept overwhelm the song. Here, the Cork City band lean into a distinctly 70s-inspired strain of funk, pairing smooth vocal harmonies with crisp rhythmic guitar and just enough seasonal unease to justify the Halloween release.
The influence of Michael McDonald is especially clear in the vocal approach, while the guitar work nods towards Nile Rodgers with its clean, percussive movement. Those reference points give the track an immediate sense of familiarity, but the band avoid making it feel like pure pastiche.
Recorded during a residential session at Migration Studios in Gloucestershire, ‘Where Do You Go?’ was one of six tracks developed while the band lived and worked together in the converted farm setting. It’s a concentrated process that seems to have suited a group built around long-standing musical chemistry.
Plenty of Halloween releases lean so heavily into theme that the music becomes secondary. But Suzy’s Field take the opposite route, as ‘Where Do You Go?’ still works outside the seasonal setting because the foundation is melodic and rhythmic first, creating something warm, polished and slightly strange in all the right places.
After more than two decades of making music together, Suzy’s Field are continuing to refine what they already do so well. ‘Where Do You Go?’’ turns nostalgia into movement, and gives Halloween a much smoother soundtrack than usual.
