‘The Light’ introduces Shak-T with a track that connects electronic production to a much longer personal history with dance music.
Released as the lead single from her forthcoming four-track EP, the song was written and produced with Jack Gourlay and combines heavy basslines with emotive electronic textures. Its club-facing sound is closely tied to Shak-T’s own experience, giving the track a context that extends beyond the dancefloor.
Before developing her work as a songwriter and producer, Shak-T was balancing medical studies with nights spent dancing at raves. But that period changed dramatically after a fall beneath a dance platform’s safety rail caused a fractured back and lasting physical disability. Music remained an important part of her life, though her relationship with it had shifted.
She moved further into DJing, building experience through vinyl, warehouse sets and festivals before eventually beginning to develop original material. ‘The Light’ reflects that progression, approaching resilience as an ongoing process of adaptation.
The production’s low-end weight gives the track a clear physical presence, while the more atmospheric electronic elements bring a reflective quality to the arrangement. The contrast between the two sides of movement and introspection gives ‘The Light’ much of its unique identity.
That balance also makes the single an appropriate introduction to the forthcoming EP. Instead of separating Shak-T’s history as a dancer, DJ and songwriter, ‘The Light’ brings those experiences together. The dancefloor remains central, but it now functions as part of a broader creative language.
As a debut, ‘The Light’ establishes Shak-T’s direction clearly. It’s grounded in electronic music and club culture, but its focus is on recovery, adaptation and finding a different way to continue creating.
