MALIK.’s IRIDESCENCE is a club record with a wider argument running through it. Across six tracks, the Lahore-based producer moves between bass music, dubstep, UK garage, drum & bass, jungle and hardgroove, but the EP is far more focused on testing how those forms can be reframed through a contemporary Pakistani perspective.
The title points towards the project’s fascination with colour and texture, with MALIK. treating visual theory and sound design as connected ideas. The result is an EP concerned not only with how music moves, but with how it’s perceived: physically in a club, emotionally in the moment and conceptually within a wider cultural context.
MALIK. is explicit about wanting to expand the conversation around South Asian electronic music, particularly beyond the more familiar global associations with hip-hop, pop and diaspora-driven crossover. IRIDESCENCE responds by placing club experimentation at the centre, without softening its edges for accessibility.
The tracks themselves create a progression built around contrast rather than one consistent palette. Even without forcing each track into a fixed genre category, the EP’s appeal lies in its movement between pressure, rhythm, density and release. And that sense of motion is central to the whole project.
MALIK. describes the EP as being about movement in both a physical and psychological sense, and that’s perhaps the most useful way to understand it. These are tracks designed for bodies first, but they’re also intended to shift assumptions about where this kind of club music can come from and who gets to define its future.
As a co-founder of Miracle Mangal and a producer and DJ with appearances across Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh, alongside support from platforms such as Boiler Room, Rinse FM and BBC Asian Radio, MALIK. is already working within a network that connects local scenes to international ones.
Dark, kinetic and conceptually focused, IRIDESCENCE positions MALIK. not simply as a producer moving between genres, but as an artist interested in changing the frame around them.
