For a band that has spent years operating quietly at the edges, The Elusives arrive at their official debut single with a sense of long-delayed momentum. ‘Run Away Into the Night’ introduces the Irish trio’s current form, pairing the longstanding creative partnership of Paul Gilligan and Joe Brady with vocalist Laura Hand, whose arrival in last year appears to have given the project the final piece it had been missing.
Gilligan and Brady first began writing together in the mid-90s, before life and other musical projects pulled them in different directions. The Elusives eventually took shape in 2014, but for years remained true to their name: occasional live appearances, lo-fi demos and a relatively private creative existence rather than a conventional release cycle.
Now, the emphasis has shifted. ‘Run Away Into the Night’ is less interesting as a sudden debut than as the public arrival of something that has been developing for a very long time. Gilligan’s guitars and synths provide the atmospheric foundation, Brady brings rhythmic drive and vocals, and Hand’s lead performance adds the sense of space and polish the band had been searching for.
But The Elusives are clearly uninterested in being boxed into one era or genre. Their stated approach is to draw selectively from decades of musical history, and that philosophy suits a group whose own story stretches across several different phases of life and collaboration.
‘Run Away Into the Night’ also carries this sense of movement, mystery and escape that surrounds the band’s wider identity, while also functioning as a first invitation into a world they have previously kept largely to themselves.
For a project defined by patience, secrecy and long-term chemistry, ‘Run Away Into the Night’ makes that first proper glimpse feel worth the wait.
