LOVESHY finds Eli Derby settling into a more defined version of his sound. Across twelve tracks, the Maryland singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist brings together contemporary R&B, pop and guitar-led soul while keeping the focus firmly on desire, uncertainty and the complications that come with opening yourself up to somebody else.
The project’s strongest quality is its consistency of perspective. His interest lies in romance without treating it as either uncomplicated bliss or inevitable disappointment. Instead, LOVESHY sits somewhere in the middle, capturing attraction as something exciting, awkward and occasionally destabilising.
Tracks like ‘Pretty Girl Dangerous’, featuring Bri3, lean into a hazy, late-night atmosphere, while ‘Fine As U’ gives more space to Derby’s guitar work and funkier instincts. ‘Don’t Play’ introduces a little more confidence and swagger, preventing the EP from becoming too inward-looking, while focus track ‘Fumble’ returns to the uncertainty that underpins much of the release.
