The result is a piece of heavy, psychologically charged rock that feels like a warning repeated until it becomes impossible to ignore.
At its core, the track examines a world in which the individual is steadily reduced to usefulness. People become numbers, consumers, excess or raw material for systems that measure value through profit alone. Culture, faith and commerce are drawn into the same transaction, their boundaries blurred until nothing appears protected from exploitation.
The lyric avoids decorative ambiguity. Its perspective is disillusioned and severe, but the song’s force comes from how that frustration is embodied musically, and Francesco Forni’s guitar work becomes the mechanism through which pressure accumulates. The riff folds back on itself, obsessive and increasingly claustrophobic, suggesting a machine that continues operating even as everything around it deteriorates.
While Piero Monterisi’s drumming gives that repetition weight and control. Kick and snare remain direct, leaving enough space for the guitars to expand without weakening the song’s physical impact. The duo format works in their favour. With fewer elements competing for attention, every change in texture becomes even more pronounced.
Comparisons to Led Zeppelin’s darker, blues-based material are understandable, particularly in the descending movement and the sense of guitar as both riff and atmosphere. Yet TOTAL REVERENDS drag these influences into a more contemporary setting, stripping away classic-rock excess and replacing it with a leaner anxiety suited to the present.
And that tension between heritage and modern abrasion reflects the wider project. Forni and Monterisi bring extensive experience from across Italian music, but TOTAL REVERENDS allows them to work with fewer rules. The group’s evolution from a large, shifting ensemble into a duo has sharpened its identity, creating room for improvisation while making the songs more exposed.
And ‘WHAT YOU LOST’ benefits from that exposure. There’s nowhere for the central idea to hide, and no unnecessary ornament to soften it. What remains is a song about dehumanisation delivered through music that feels insistently human: imperfect, physical and alive with resistance.
