Gina Malcom takes aim at modern pressures on ‘Traps’

New Zealand singer-songwriter Gina Malcom returns with ‘Traps’, the latest single to emerge from her debut album First Rodeo, bringing a sharper edge to her blend of alt-country and Americana influences.

Carried by wiry guitar work, shadowy atmospherics and a vocal performance that balances vulnerability with resolve, the track examines the distractions and expectations that shape contemporary life. Malcom turns her attention towards consumer culture, impossible standards and the endless pursuit of appearances, questioning what is truly worth chasing and what merely pulls us off course.

Before stepping into music full-time, Malcom spent years working as a journalist and television presenter, eventually returning to a long-held ambition to pursue songwriting and recording. Collaborations with producer Matt Joe Gow, alongside contributions from members of New Zealand’s thriving alternative country scene, helped shape the album’s distinctive character.

With ‘Traps’, Gina Malcom offers a thoughtful reminder to keep an eye on the things that quietly pull us away from ourselves.
