polyμ finds precision inside the rush of ‘pulse’

Electronic music built for movement can often become overly concerned with impact. The louder the beat, the faster the tempo and the brighter the synthesiser, the better, or so the assumption goes. But on ‘pulse’, Tokyo quartet polyμ take a more considered route, creating an energetic dance track whose momentum comes as much from careful interplay as outright force.

The single moves with immediate purpose, but its arrangement is far from one-dimensional. Guitars cut through the mix in clipped, repeating patterns, providing a physical edge that distinguishes the track from purely programmed club music. Beneath them, bass and drums offer a firm rhythmic framework, while shimmering electronic layers broaden the atmosphere without softening the track’s drive.

And that meeting of live performance and studio construction is central to polyμ’s identity. The group brings together musicians drawn from several corners of Japan’s independent scene, including members associated with miaou, FOX LOCO PHANTOM, GOLIATH and the re live band. Their collective experience is evident in the way ‘pulse’ handles density. There are numerous elements in motion, yet the track remains clear enough for each instrumental detail to register.

The guitars are particularly effective, functioning almost like additional percussion by adding tension and forward movement through repetition. Their sharper presence creates a useful contrast with the softer glow of the synthesiser work, giving the track both urgency and space.

Since forming in 2022, polyμ have approached the project as a space outside the members’ established work, allowing them to explore electronic composition with fewer stylistic expectations. ‘pulse’ suggests that this freedom is beginning to produce a clear shared language.

With this new release, polyμ deliver an assured electronic release that understands speed alone doesn’t create excitement. Its real energy comes from precision, contrast and four experienced musicians finding fresh possibilities within a tightly constructed groove.
