The Natural Curve moves towards synth-pop on the hypnotic ‘Silly Girl’

On his newest endeavour, UK producer Paul Cullen introduces a more pop-oriented side to The Natural Curve, while retaining the understated rhythmic detail and electronic warmth that have shaped the project over the years.

The single features 20-year-old vocalist Liberty Taylor, whose clear and emotive delivery gives the track much of its immediate appeal. Her theatrical background is faintly present in the way she approaches the song, bringing a sense of personality without pushing the performance into exaggeration.

Right from the start, ‘Silly Girl’ is lighter and more concise than much of Cullen’s previous catalogue, but it doesn’t feel disconnected from it. The track still reflects his interest in combining electronic textures with vocal expression, only this time through a more accessible pop structure. Retro synth tones are present, though they are used with enough restraint to prevent the song from becoming overly nostalgic.

The collaboration between both Cullen and Taylor is central to the single’s effectiveness. Their different levels of experience create a useful contrast, with the producer providing compositional control and the singer bringing a fresher, less established vocal identity. But instead of sounding like a guest artist placed over a finished instrumental, she is integrated into the track’s overall DNA from start to finish.

And that approach is consistent with Cullen’s wider history of working with vocalists and instrumentalists from different musical backgrounds. The Natural Curve has always operated as a flexible project, moving between house, funk, drum and bass, downbeat and jazz without needing to remain fixed within one style. And ‘Silly Girl’ extends that range into synth-pop in a way that feels considered rather than sudden or abrupt.

‘Silly Girl’ may not attempt to redefine synth-pop, but it offers a well-judged step into the genre. It’s concise, melodic and neatly produced, with Liberty Taylor’s performance adding enough flair to suggest that this partnership could develop even further in the years ahead as well.
