Berlin-based project Aircraft, helmed by Ukrainian musician Daniel Merkulov, returns with ‘Idiot Love’, a single from the forthcoming album Death is Around the Corner. Since its inception in Kyiv in 2011, Aircraft has evolved from minimal shoegaze and dream-pop experiments into a richly textured solo project that seamlessly blends alternative rock, post-punk, and synth-driven indie sounds.
‘Idiot Love’ sets a contemplative tone, opening with delicate, atmospheric guitar lines that thread through understated drum machine rhythms. Daniel’s vocals hover with an almost detached quality, conjuring the spirit of early Depeche Mode, while soft synth washes and subtle melodic flourishes evoke the ethereal warmth of Cocteau Twins and A.R. Kane. The track’s production strikes a careful balance between lo-fi charm and polished detail, allowing every nuance- from the sighing guitars to the pulsating electronic textures- to resonate fully.
‘Idiot Love’ examines the fragility of human connection, the tension between desire and self-awareness, and the bittersweet pangs of longing. It’s a careful choreography of mood and melody, drawing the listener into Aircraft’s distinctive world. This single also underscores Daniel’s long-running evolution as a solo artist. Building on previous releases like Sadhu and Evidence, ‘Idiot Love’ highlights his ability to blend post-punk edge, synth nostalgia, and indie-pop hooks. The track proves that Aircraft is not just a studio project but a fully realised artistic vision, capable of capturing melancholy, tension, and beauty in equal measure.
With Death is Around the Corner slated for December, ‘Idiot Love’ sets the tone for an album that promises to be both immersive and evocative. For fans of melodic, introspective indie rock with a cinematic pulse, Aircraft continues to demonstrate why Daniel Merkulov remains one of Europe’s most compelling indie voices.
